Top 8 Free Antivirus Software

If your computer ever connects to the Internet, it's potentially exposed to viruses and other malicious software. Then antivirus software will be neccessary which provides an essential layer of protection from a multitude of virus, trojan, worm, spyware infections for your computers. Here are a list of eight free antivirus software for you reference.

Avast! Free Antivirus software 6.0
It is my favoriate free antivirus software in light of recent developments. The new version 6 dandy new features including an internet site ratings plugin, script malware protection and a limited (non-configurable) sandboxing feature. And it's a great-looking program. Avast! obtained VB100% awards in 2002/4 Virus Bulletin comparative reviews under Windows.

AVG Anti-Virus Free 2011
AVG Amto-Virus  is also a decent choice for a free antivirus. It is better at removing malware than most free solutions, but not at malware blocking. With the current release it has the full power of AVG's paid solutions, and the independent labs give it top marks. Add some unusual bonus features and you've got a solid choice for free antivirus protection.

Microsoft Security Essentials 2.0
MSE is a great choice for average users because of the minimal user interaction required. It automatically updates and removes threats. No registration is needed, apart from a quick validating of Windows, and there are no nag screens or advertisements.
If using a Microsoft product gives you a warm, safe feeling you may consider relying on Microsoft Security Essentials for antivirus protection. The independent labs give it good ratings, for the most part. In my own testing, though, it didn't shine. Other free products offer better protection.

Norton Power Eraser
Norton Power Eraser's aggressive detection features catch threats others miss. It can also remove malware that blocks antivirus installation. The combination of Norton 360 and Norton Power Eraser can give you a firm prevention for your computer.

Panda Cloud Antivirus
Panda Cloud Antivirus is Panda's successful attempt to jump on the free antivirus bandwagon. Along with MSE, it is an excellent choice for average users with a simple interface and completely automated features with automatic updating and removal of malware. It has a behavioural blocker and web protection, which will certainly increase your security. However as you can simply use one of the other free AV's with a separate behavioural blocker (for further details see our Security Wizard) to achieve possibly even better protection, this is not necessarily an advantage.

Norman Malware Cleaner
Norman's malware cleanup isn't the best. However, this free tool runs even when malware blocks installation of more full-featured products. Give it a try when you need a quick fix.

Comodo Antivirus
Comodo Antivirus from Comodo Security Solutions is another excellent program, easily one of the best free antivirus options out there. As of this writing, Comodo Antivirus bills itself as the "Best Antivirus on the Market. Guaranteed." due to its proprietary Defense+ technology. Comodo Antivirus also protects you from several threat sources, just as most of the other best free antivirus programs on this list do. It works on Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP.

Avira AntiVir Personal
Avira AntiVir Personal FREE Antivirus was developed to be a reliable free antivirus solution, that constantly and rapidly scans your computer for malicious programs such as viruses, Trojans, backdoor programs, hoaxes, worms, dialers etc. Monitors every action executed by the user or the operating system and reacts promptly when a malicious program is detected.
