How to Convert PDF to ePub with Calibre

PDFs are one of the worst formats to convert from for eBooks since they render the same on any devices and can preserve the exact layout of the print book. However, this benefit is the major disadvantage on mobile devices, as you often have to zoom and pan back and forth to see everything on the page. ePub files, on the other hand, are a greate option. ePub files can reflow to fill your screen instead of sticking to a strict layout style. And converting PDF to ePub files is free with free Calibre program, the conversion process is quick. Take a view for these steps.

Download and install Calibre
Download the Calibre installer from http://www.calibre-ebook.com/download. It works on Windows, OS X, and Linux. The first time you run calibre it will take you through a quick setup. The first thing you'll want to do is specify your 'ebooks' folder. This is the location you'll save your .epub files.
Click the Add books button in the top-left corner of the window.

Navigate to a PDF file that you want to convert to an .epub file. Select it and click Open

Convert to ePub
Now we'll start the actual conversion process. Make sure your PDF file is selected in the main list of books, and then click the small arrow next to the Convert E-books button. From the list that will appear, select whether you want to convert them individually or bulk convert them. We only has one PDF, so please click Convert Individually.

Then the converter window will appear. It has lots of options, so you can do a lot of settings and get your ePub book exactly like you want. If your PDF doesn't contain actual text, the conversion will not work. Some PDFs are actually images scanned in from the original books; these will appear just like the PDF after the conversion, and won't be any easier to read.

Depending on the size of your PDF/eBook the conversion process will vary. It took less than 10 seconds to convert my 200 page PDF. If you're using a Mac and have growl installed, you'll get a window notifying you that the conversion has finished. And now in the folder you specified will contain an .epub version of your PDF. This is the file we'll upload to your iPad.

Conclusion
Calibri makes it simple to read your eBooks in any format you need. Whether you want to ready your PDF eBooks on a Sony Reader, Kindle, netbook or Smartphone, your books will now be more accessible than ever.

  1. Hi all,

Calibre is a free PDF to ePub converter software and widely applicable to windows, Mac OSX, and Linux. It supports the conversion of many input formats to many output formats. PDF to ePub converter is more professional than Calibre, and most important. It can store the original text, layout, tables, images in original PDF files. Thanks a lot...
